We have asked experts what makes a good gin to them. In addition to a high alcoholic content which is important as a flavour carrier, we first and foremost heard one thing: its full aroma! It must be authentic and the flavour must tell where the gin comes from. It must be rich and slowly unfold on the palate.
Gin originally comes from the Netherlands as genever and in the 17th century, it was popularised by King William III of Orange in England. This was the beginning of the triumphal procession of an initially simple high percentage spirit. Gin was produced everywhere in England at all times and consumed excessively. This was followed by tax increases and restrictions in order to contain this. Only centuries later, gin developed to be a premium spirit specialty and after a boom in the 1950s, it has become a trendy drink in cocktail bars all over the world.
Juniper is still the most important „Botanical“, giving the gin its characteristic flavour. There are also numerous other herbal ingredients depending on the origin, giving each variety its singularity and quality.
