When darkness falls on the 21st of June - the day of the Summer Solstice - and the shortest night of the year begins, mystical fires are lit in the Tyrolean mountains.
The peaks of the Tyrolean Alps burn... flickering chains of light illuminate complete mountain ridges... the dark night sky is illuminated by orange-red fires...
There is a long tradition of the solstice fires in Tyrol: Even in pre-Christian times, the native tribes worshiped the power of Mother Earth at the summer solstice by illuminating the mountain peaks. These sacred ceremonies were accompanied by various rituals, such as dances around the fire as well as leaps through the blazing flames. A touch of this ancient magic is still in the air...
Religious images are the most common on the mountain walls. This is mainly because the solstice fires are often celebrated with the Sacred Heart of Jesus Fires and the St. John's Fires today, as they are chronologically close to the solstice fires.
The Sacred Heart of Jesus Fires are thus traditionally lit on the third Sunday following Pentecost, to commemorate the Sacred Heart of Jesus pledge in 1796. Back then, the Tyroleans vowed to unite in the battle against Napoleon's troops - this vow was sealed with fiery religious images on the rock walls of Tyrol. The Sacred Heart of Jesus fires usually depict hearts, crosses or the signs of Christ "INRI" or "IHS". They are considered the "flaming proof" of the interminability of this old alliance, which is still intended to demonstrate the unity of Tyrol today.
This is the reason why it recently became part of the UNESCO List of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
