The market town Zirl in the Tyrolean Inntal used to be known throughout Tyrol for its goat grazing. The goat – „the poor man’s cow“, as it was generally called – used to be the domestic animal of ordinary people, because those who could not afford enough grazing for a cow, kept one or two goats to provide milk for the family. Because the meadows along the river Inn used to be cultivated only sparsely, the goats had to go find something to eat themselves from the beginning of spring until late in autumn. For this purpose the goat shepherd – called the “Goasser” (goater) – used to collect the goats of the village in the mornings and herded them northwards to graze in the forest.
The figure of the Zirler Goaßer is known across Tyrol because of its originality. Most of these shepherds were probably peasants of meager existence, whose families needed an extra income for survival – by herding the goats one could secure such extra earnings. Some herders also acted as mountain guides or carriers in the highlands of Zirl – frequently they would also collect herbs. Due to his activities, as described, the Goaser was well-known in all the homes, also because the peasants used to pay him by way of a meal in daily turns. In addition, every shepherd received a specific amount of money (in 1892 it was 1 guilder and 30 kreutzer), as well as a loaf of bread as payment for his services per goat and summer.
